Azitra, Inc. is an early-stage clinical biopharmaceutical company developing innovative therapies for precision dermatology using engineered proteins and topical live biotherapeutic products. Its platform includes a microbial library of approximately 1,500 unique bacterial strains that can be screened for therapeutic characteristics, augmented by artificial intelligence and machine learning that analyzes and predicts drug-like molecules. The initial focus is genetically engineered strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis. Its lead program, ATR-12, targets Netherton syndrome, a chronic and sometimes fatal skin disease. ATR-04 targets the papulopustular rash experienced by cancer patients undergoing epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor therapy, and received Fast Track designation from the FDA. ATR-01 targets ichthyosis vulgaris, where the company completed lead optimization studies in 2025 and continues IND-enabling studies in 2026. Azitra has partnerships with Carnegie Mellon University, which uses artificial intelligence to mine the library for drug-like peptides and proteins, and with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, from which it holds an exclusive worldwide license to the SyMPL technologies.
