Pfizer has cut its way to stability, but growth after Eliquis still rests on phase 3 bets

Pfizer has stabilized its business with growing non-COVID sales, a strong Padcev franchise and more than $10 billion in cost cuts. Growth after the Eliquis cliff depends on obesity and oncology programs that have not yet produced late-stage data, and the sigvotatug vedotin miss weakened the Seagen story.

Opinion only. The Investor Rank is aibio.space's opinion of the company's business position, drawn from the public sources on this page. It is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security and it is not investment advice. It does not consider the share price, valuation or your circumstances, and it can change at any time. Payments from companies never affect it. How the rank works.

Technology
Two bought platforms. Padcev is a proven ADC winner, while the next Seagen ADC failed and obesity is still in phase 3.
Odds
Good near term, unproven long term. Talzenna's FDA decision is due in Q4 2026, but berobenatide and the PD-1 x VEGF bispecific lack late-stage data.
Balance sheet
Profitable but indebted. About $11.7 billion in cash and short-term investments against $63.2 billion of debt at June 28, 2026.
Main risk
Patent cliff timing. Eliquis loses protection before obesity and new oncology drugs can scale, with growth seen returning from 2028.
Watch next
ESMO data, October 23 to 27. Then third-quarter results on November 3 and the Talzenna FDA decision in Q4.

Some gaps

Pfizer's filings back its numbers, but the obesity and lung-cancer messages are more upbeat than the data behind them

Pfizer's second-quarter release and 10-Q agree on the financials, and the release leads with the reported loss and the $4.3 billion of impairments. The softer spots are in the pipeline messaging: a lung-cancer ADC that missed its survival goal was described in terms of a subgroup, and the obesity headline rests on an exploratory weekly-dose figure.

  1. Press release vs filing · weight high

Sigvotatug: subgroup optimism vs a missed primary endpoint and a $3.8 billion write-down

The company said: "Although the study did not meet its overall survival endpoint, in second-line patients the data suggest a clinically meaningful survival benefit" source

The record says: The 10-Q states the study "did not meet its primary endpoint of a statistically significant improvement in overall survival compared to docetaxel" and records "$ 3.8 billion in impairments of IPR&D assets, associated with a Phase 3 study for sigvotatug vedotin for the second line treatment of metastatic non-squamous NSCLC, reflecting unfavorable clinical trial results." source

Our view: The June release is open that the primary endpoint was missed, but the second-line trend language sits beside no hazard ratio or survival numbers. The accounting treatment shows how Pfizer itself valued the result: as an impairment, not a delay.

  2. Science · weight medium

Berobenatide headline weight loss is a non-placebo-adjusted, exploratory figure

The company said: "non-placebo-adjusted weight loss of 15.9%" source

The record says: The same release says the figure came from participants who escalated from placebo to 2.4 mg weekly berobenatide, with "no plateau observed at 32 weeks on berobenatide," and that "Pfizer plans to advance 10 Phase 3 studies for berobenatide in 2026." The release does not give enrollment numbers or discontinuation rates for the phase 2b trials, describing GI events and discontinuations only as "low." source

Our view: The headline is a weekly-dose number from an extension part, while the title promotes monthly dosing. Without placebo-adjusted data, sample sizes or numeric discontinuation rates, cross-trial comparisons with other obesity drugs are not possible from this release.

  3. Press release vs filing · weight low

Reported loss and adjusted profit are both prominent

The company said: "Second-Quarter 2026 Reported Loss Per Share of $(0.04), and Adjusted Diluted EPS of $0.77" source

The record says: The release adds "Reported Loss Per Share Reflects $4.3 Billion in Non-Cash Intangible Asset Impairments." The 10-Q carries the same impairments, including $525 million for Oxbryta after "there was no viable pathway to return Oxbryta to the market in the U.S." source

Our view: Pfizer puts GAAP and adjusted figures in the same headline and says what drove the gap, so there is no mismatch here. The Oxbryta and sigvotatug charges together total $4.3 billion, which is what the 'adjusted' number leaves out of the reported loss.

  4. Legal and disclosure record · weight medium

Product, patent and government matters disclosed; no securities class action in the legal note

The record says: Note 12A lists Zantac cases in an MDL in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, Chantix putative class actions in an MDL in the Southern District of New York ("In March 2026, the parties reached an agreement in principle to resolve the litigation on terms not material to Pfizer"), Depo-Provera cases ("In June 2026, we reached an agreement-in-principle with plaintiff leadership in the Depo-Provera MDL") and DOJ requests relating to its India manufacturing operations (March 2020). source

Our view: These are documented matters in the filing, not findings of wrongdoing. The legal note describes no securities class action against Pfizer in the sections we read.
