Krystal has a profitable approved gene therapy and about $1.1 billion in cash, which funds a broad pipeline built on the same vector. The pipeline data are early, and Vyjuvek growth has slowed. This is analysis of public information, not advice.

- Technology
- Proven in skin. A herpes-virus vector delivers a gene in an approved product, but the lung and tumor uses are unproven.
- Odds
- Pipeline is early. Rare disease programs reach filing 60.4% of the time after phase 3, but KB407 and KB707 are in early studies of small patient groups.
- Balance sheet
- Profitable and funded. About $1.1 billion in cash and a $54.8 million quarterly profit, with no runway figure given.
- Main risk
- One product carries the business. Vyjuvek growth slowed to 24% in Q2 and European pricing talks are still open.

- Derivative suit
Krystal director-pay derivative suit settlement is set for a September 14, 2026 fairness hearing
Krystal's 10-Q filed August 3, 2026 says the parties to a derivative suit in the Delaware Court of Chancery entered into a settlement agreement, subject to court approval after a fairness hearing scheduled for September 14, 2026. If approved, the company will adopt and maintain certain corporate governance reforms for five years. The company recorded a liability for the plaintiff's attorneys' fees and expenses, which it describes as not material.

Inventorship suit filed against Krystal over two KB407 cystic fibrosis patents
Krystal reported in its 10-Q that on May 29, 2026 Jonathan Forman filed a lawsuit against it in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Docket No. 1:26-cv-00628. The complaint seeks correction of inventorship on two patents that the plaintiff alleges are embodied in the KB407 cystic fibrosis candidate. He alleges he was erroneously omitted as a named inventor. Krystal believes the claims are without merit and cannot estimate a loss.
- Derivative suit

Fact-check-o-meter
Vyjuvek numbers hold up; the new Gorlin data are thinner than the release reads
Krystal's revenue and cash figures match its 10-Q, and the company flagged an earlier KB801 data point itself. The KB113 release leads with a lesion response rate built on three open-label patients, and the legal matters in the 10-Q, including DOJ subpoenas tied to Vyjuvek, were not in the quarterly results release.
Science · weight medium
Headline response rate counts any shrinkage in 3 patients
The company said: "Broad antitumor responses were detected in all three Gorlin syndrome patients treated with KB113, with over 80% of assessed BCC lesions reducing in size;" source
The record says: The same release's table shows 69/83 (83.1%) lesions with "Any clinical regression in lesion size", 42/83 (50.6%) with more than 50% regression and 8/83 (9.6%) with at least 90% regression. It describes the study as "a multicenter, single-arm, open label study" in which "The investigator selected which landmark lesions to inject" and regression was judged on an "investigator-assessed 5-point clearance scale". source
Our view: The 80% figure is true as stated, but it includes any shrinkage at all. About one lesion in ten reached 90% regression. With three patients, no control arm and the investigator both choosing and grading lesions, this is a first signal, not efficacy data.
Science · weight medium
Histology confirmed response only in lesions already doing best
The company said: "Complete clearance of an injected lesion was also confirmed histologically for each of the three patients treated with KB113." source
The record says: The release explains: "To further assess clinical regression, one injected lesion from each patient that had achieved at least 90% clinical regression was biopsied." The release cites no registry entry for the Gorlin pilot study itself. The OPAL-1 record it points to (NCT05970497) covers the separate KB707 phase 1/2 solid tumor study and lists two primary outcomes, "Percentage of adverse events (AEs)" and "Percentage of serious adverse events (SAEs)", and an estimated enrollment of 240. source
Our view: Three biopsies from the best-responding lesions show the drug can clear a tumor. They say little about how often it does. The OPAL-1 registry primary outcomes are safety only and the release gives no registry record for the Gorlin pilot, so the response analysis here is preliminary.

$1.1 billion headline versus the 10-Q's narrower cash line
The company said: "Cash, cash equivalents and investments totaled $1.1 billion as of June 30, 2026" source
The record says: The 10-Q says: "As of June 30, 2026, our cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments balance was approximately $845.6 million". The balance sheet in the release lists $257,291 thousand of long-term investments on top of that. source
Our view: Both numbers are right. The difference is long-term investments of about $257 million, which the 10-Q leaves out when it says the cash is enough for at least 12 months. The filing's 12-month funding statement uses the narrower $845.6 million figure.
Press release vs filing · weight low
An earlier KB801 study surfaced through a patent filing
The company said: "The Company continues to enroll in EMERALD-1, the Company's registrational, 1:1 randomized, double-masked, multicenter, placebo-controlled study evaluating KB801 for the treatment of NK." source
The record says: A July 21 8-K says a patent response "included data from a patient who received KB801 in a discontinued clinical study" and that "The Company did not previously disclose the single-patient observation described above". It adds that "no conclusions regarding the safety or efficacy of KB801 should be drawn from it." source
Our view: The company flagged the patent-record data itself, which is the right move. The Aug. 3 release describes EMERALD-1 without mentioning the discontinued study, and the 8-K gives no results beyond one patient, so the earlier data stay thin.
Legal and disclosure record · weight medium
DOJ subpoenas, a derivative suit with a proposed settlement and a patent inventorship suit in the 10-Q
The record says: The Q2 10-Q's legal note says the company and certain employees "received subpoenas from the U.S. Department of Justice requesting that the Company produce certain documents regarding its sponsored genetic testing program relating to VYJUVEK" and that it is cooperating. It also describes a derivative complaint filed September 18, 2025 in the Delaware Court of Chancery over director pay, with a settlement subject to a fairness hearing scheduled for September 14, 2026, and a May 29, 2026 inventorship suit by Jonathan Forman in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware (Docket No. 1:26-cv-00628) over patents that the plaintiff alleges are embodied in KB407. source
Our view: The DOJ inquiry concerns the commercial practices behind the one product that generates the revenue, and the filing says no loss can be estimated. The Aug. 3 results release did not mention these matters. We did not review the later court outcome of the settlement hearing.
