Novo has the cash and the pill; it needs new products to stop the U.S. slide
Novo still earns large profits from semaglutide, and the Wegovy pill is selling well. But U.S. sales are falling, its non-GLP-1 bets have disappointed, and the company now depends on Q4 approvals and licensed assets to change its direction.

Novo's '9 in 10' liver claim rests on 23 of 26 patients, and its 'raised outlook' still points to flat or lower sales
Novo's Q2 report and its later announcements are internally consistent, and the company states the bad news on ziltivekimab and denecimig plainly. The gaps are in framing: the headline leads with adjusted profit and a raised outlook that still points to flat or lower sales, and the liver-fat release headlines a post hoc figure from 26 patients. The Q2 report's legal section lists IT-incident class actions and patent suits, not securities suits.
Science · weight high
'9 in 10' liver fat result is 23 of 26 patients in a post hoc analysis
The company said: "9 in 10 achieved normal liver fat levels: Among participants with liver fat above 5%, 88.5% in the pooled group of people taking Wegovy® (injectable semaglutide 7.2 and 2.4 mg) achieved normal liver fat levels below 5% by week 72" source
The record says: The same release says it presents "post hoc analysis of data from a STEP UP trial sub-population with 55 participants", that "26 participants entered the trials with liver fat above 5% and 88.5% of them" reached the below-5% threshold, which the release counts as 23 participants, and that the analysis "was not a pre-specified primary or secondary endpoint of the parent trials". It also says "Semaglutide 7.2 mg is not being investigated for the treatment of MASH." source
Our view: The headline is arithmetically right and the small numbers are in the release. But 23 patients in an exploratory subgroup, with no stated comparison to placebo for this figure, is thin support for a headline about 9 in 10 adults. It also shows an effect on a liver fat measure, not on MASH outcomes.
Press release vs filing · weight medium
'Raises outlook' headline leads with adjusted figures
The company said: "Novo Nordisk reports adjusted operating profit of DKK 33,389 million for Q2 2026 and raises full-year outlook" source
The record says: The same report says "Q2 2026 reported operating profit decreased by 16% at CER, with growth negatively impacted by the US 340B rebate provision reversal in Q2 2025 as well as non-cash impairment charges of DKK 6.3 billion in Q2 2026 related to intangible pipeline assets, including monlunabant (DKK 4.0 billion)." The raised outlook reads: "Adjusted sales growth for 2026 is now expected to be 0% to -6% at CER and adjusted operating profit growth is now expected to be 0% to -6% at CER." source
Our view: The adjustments are defined and reconciled in the report, so this is a framing point, not a contradiction. Reading only the headline, one would miss that reported operating profit fell and that even the raised guidance is a range of flat to down 6%.
Press release vs filing · weight medium
Denecimig delay: the facility remediation news came after the Q2 report
The company said: "Denecimig US & EU decision" source
The record says: The October 2 announcement says the FDA "has informed Novo that the ongoing facility remediation activities are the cause for extension of the Agency's review" and that Novo had anticipated "a regulatory decision in the third quarter of 2026". It adds that "the FDA performed a pre-license inspection of the manufacturing site and provided feedback" after the September 2025 submission, without giving the date of that feedback. source
Our view: The Q2 report's milestone table lists a denecimig decision for 2026 and does not mention facility remediation. The filing does not say when Novo learned of the FDA's feedback, so we cannot say the Q2 report was out of date. The announcement is clear that the FDA found no efficacy or safety deficiencies.
Science · weight low
ZEUS was a clean negative, with an impairment still to come
The company said: "this did not translate into major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) risk reduction versus placebo in people with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and inflammation (hazard ratio, 0.99; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.11)" source
The record says: ClinicalTrials.gov lists ZEUS (NCT05021835) as randomized, quadruple-masked, with 6,385 actual participants and time to first 3-point MACE as the primary outcome. The announcement says ZEUS "will not impact Novo Nordisk's previously communicated adjusted operating profit outlook for 2026 but will result in a non-cash impairment charge in Q3 2026". source
Our view: The result is stated plainly: well-designed trial, no effect, and a higher proportion of people on ziltivekimab with serious infections. The announcement says ZEUS will not change the adjusted operating profit outlook but will bring a non-cash impairment charge in Q3 2026.
Legal and disclosure record · weight medium
IT-incident class actions and patent suits disclosed
The record says: Legal matters in the Q2 2026 report: "Novo Nordisk is a defendant in multiple putative class action lawsuits in the US related to an IT security incident about which the company issued a press release on 11 June 2026." It also lists a Sandoz suit filed on 30 June 2026 in the Unified Patent Court (Milan Central Division) seeking revocation of a semaglutide patent, and a false advertising suit Novo filed against Eli Lilly on 21 July 2026 in federal court in New Jersey. source
Our view: These are matters Novo discloses itself. The legal section does not list a securities class action, and the report does not quantify exposure from the IT-incident suits.
