Alkermes is betting its sleep purchase and orexin drugs can outrun Vivitrol generics
Alkermes has a growing commercial base, a new CEO and a young orexin pipeline that has yet to report Phase 3 data. Generic Vivitrol in 2027 and the debt from the Avadel purchase are the main financial constraints. The next dated tests are alixorexton in idiopathic hypersomnia and the LUMRYZ filing.

- Technology
- Early but differentiated. Orexin 2 agonists are a young drug class, and alixorexton has Phase 3 studies running alongside an approved sleep product, LUMRYZ.
- Odds
- Mixed. LUMRYZ in idiopathic hypersomnia has a positive Phase 3 result, while alixorexton Phase 3 results and ADHD Phase 2 data are still to come.
- Balance sheet
- Adequate but leveraged. $691.6 million in cash at June 30 against $1.525 billion of term loans borrowed for the Avadel deal.
- Main risk
- Generic Vivitrol. Teva can launch a licensed generic from Jan. 15, 2027, and the product is guided to $460 million to $480 million of 2026 sales.
- Watch next
- Vibrance-3 topline. Phase 2 results for alixorexton in idiopathic hypersomnia are expected toward year-end 2026.

Alkermes' two new data releases lead with positive framing and state the design limits in the body text
Alkermes' financial figures match its 10-Q, and both new clinical releases state their design limits in the body text. The gaps are in headlines and framing: a 10-patient placebo group is called proof-of-concept, and a two-week withdrawal test is described as improvement over placebo. The 10-Q also discloses an antitrust class action the earnings release does not mention.

ADHD "proof-of-concept" rests on 50 patients and no powered comparison
The company said: "Alkermes Announces Positive Phase 1b Results Demonstrating Clinical Proof-of-Concept for ALKS 7290 in Adults With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)" source
The record says: The same release says 50 adults were randomized 4:1, with 10 on placebo, for 14 days, and that "The study was not designed or powered to detect statistically significant differences between treatment groups." The reported AISRS and CGI-S figures are median reductions from baseline in the 20 mg and 50 mg groups. The release gives no placebo-group figures. ClinicalTrials.gov lists the planned phase 2 (NCT07755410) as randomized and double-blind, about 312 participants, with a primary outcome of change in AISRS total score at week 4. source
Our view: Change from baseline in a small, short study with no reported placebo comparison cannot separate drug effect from placebo response, which is large in ADHD. The release is open about the limit, but the headline and the "first" claim go further than the data. The phase 2 is the real test.

IH win measures worsening after withdrawal, after open-label dosing
The company said: "LUMRYZ Met All Primary and Key Secondary Endpoints Demonstrating Statistically Significant and Clinically Meaningful Improvements Compared to Placebo in Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and Patient-Reported Disease Severity" source
The record says: The release describes a randomized withdrawal design: "All study participants received LUMRYZ during an open-label dose titration period" and 104 participants were then randomized, with endpoints measured "to assess the worsening of symptoms for those participants on placebo as compared to those that remained on LUMRYZ." The double-blind period lasted 2 weeks. ClinicalTrials.gov lists the primary outcome as change in total ESS score over a "2 week period". source
Our view: The result shows that stopping the drug makes patients worse within two weeks, which is a valid way to support approval. It is not the same as showing improvement versus placebo from a treatment-naive start, and it tells investors little about longer-term benefit or about how large the effect is beyond the open-label run-in. Alkermes also may not market for IH before March 1, 2028, per the release.
Press release vs filing · weight low
"Strong financial foundation" and new acquisition debt
The company said: "With a talented team, a strong financial foundation and exciting opportunities ahead in sleep medicine and across our neuroscience portfolio, I am honored to step into the CEO role" source
The record says: The 10-Q says that on Feb. 12, 2026, for the Avadel acquisition, "we borrowed the full $1.525 billion available to us" under term loans. The release's balance sheet shows long-term debt of 1,476,611 (thousands) with none at Dec. 31, 2025, and a six-month GAAP net loss of $(66.0) million against second-quarter GAAP net income of $0.5 million. source
Our view: The numbers are all in the release, and adjusted EBITDA of $139.2 million is a fair operating gauge. But the release's headline pairs it with GAAP net income of $0.5 million, and the loan balance and the six-month GAAP loss show the cost of the deal.
Legal and disclosure record · weight medium
Antitrust class action and a state investigation disclosed
The record says: Note 18 of the 10-Q describes an October 2025 complaint by Value Drug Company in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, on behalf of a putative class of direct VIVITROL purchasers, which asserts antitrust claims alleging that the Company's U.S. Patent No. 7,919,499 related to VIVITROL was improperly obtained, improperly listed in the Orange Book and wrongfully enforced, delaying generic entry. Alkermes "intends to vigorously defend itself" and moved to dismiss in December 2025. The filing also says "The Company has received a civil investigative demand from a U.S. state governmental authority. The Company is cooperating with the investigation." It lists LYBALVI patent suits against Teva, Apotex and MSN in New Jersey and Delaware. The 10-Q discloses no securities litigation. source
Our view: These are allegations by a private plaintiff, not findings, and the filing says no probable material loss is determined. They concern Vivitrol, which had $124.5 million of the quarter's $496.0 million in revenue, and the earnings release does not mention them.
