enGene Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: ENGN) said on June 15, 2026 that it is cutting its workforce by about 50% in a restructuring it describes as a way to streamline operations and preserve cash. The board approved the plan, effective June 14, 2026. Several senior officers are leaving, and the chief medical officer has resigned. The details are in a Form 8-K filed June 15, 2026.
Why the company says it is cutting
The board approved the restructuring to preserve shareholder capital while enGene awaits more durability data and meets the Food and Drug Administration about its LEGEND pivotal cohort for detalimogene. Chief Executive Officer Ron Cooper said the company made "the very difficult decision to downsize the organization to streamline operations." The company says it kept the people it needs to complete LEGEND Cohort 1, enroll a detalimogene plus surfactant cohort, meet the FDA and plan to start a Biologics License Application, or BLA, in the second half of 2026.
enGene estimates restructuring costs of $5.7 million to $6.4 million, mainly severance and benefits. It also expects $4.7 million to $5.0 million in non-cash stock compensation, mostly from accelerated option vesting. It has stopped enrollment in LEGEND Cohorts 2a, 2b and 3 to conserve cash. Separately, it approved cash retention bonuses of about $1.7 million, payable on two milestones: completing the pre-BLA meeting with the FDA by December 31, 2026, and FDA confirmation by September 30, 2027 that the BLA has been completed and accepted.
The trial data are interim
The release reports interim LEGEND Cohort 1 data for detalimogene in patients with BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with carcinoma in situ. The headline figure is a complete response rate of 54%, with a 95% confidence interval of 45% to 63%, counted as complete response at any time in 67 of 124 patients. The company also reports progression to muscle-invasive or more advanced disease of 3.2%.
Three points matter. The data are interim, and the company is still waiting for more durability data before it meets the FDA. The measure counts any complete response, including one that may not last. The confidence interval is wide, so the true rate could sit toward either end of the range. The company expects 12-month data and an FDA meeting in the second half of 2026, so the regulatory outcome is still ahead.
Officers leaving
Ryan Daws, chief financial officer, leaves effective July 15, 2026. If he signs a separation agreement, he would receive twelve months of base salary continuation totaling $517,880. Kathleen Richton, now vice president and controller, becomes senior vice president, finance on or about July 16, 2026, and succeeds Mr. Daws as principal financial officer. Lee Giguere, chief legal officer, and Alex Nichols, chief strategy and operations officer, also depart effective July 15, 2026. Chief Scientific Officer Anthony Cheung leaves on September 30, 2026 and is expected to stay on as a consultant. Dr. Hussein Sweiti resigned as chief medical officer effective June 14, 2026. Board member William Grossman, M.D., Ph.D., became interim chief medical officer on June 15, 2026, and the board says he will no longer be treated as independent.
Cash and losses
The press release reports cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $285.2 million as of April 30, 2026. Operating expenses for the three months ended April 30, 2026 were $32.0 million, against $27.1 million a year earlier. Net loss attributable to common shareholders was about $30.2 million, or $0.43 per share.
The annual report on Form 10-K, filed December 22, 2025 under the name enGene Holdings Inc., reports a net loss of $117.3 million for the fiscal year ended October 31, 2025, against $55.1 million for the year before. Research and development expense was $94.5 million for that year, against $38.3 million the year before.
enGene describes itself as a clinical-stage, non-viral genetic medicines company developing detalimogene for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Its cash balance is large, but the company is cutting half its staff while its key regulatory step still depends on data it has not yet reported.
