The reorganization

LENZ Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: LENZ) announced a strategic reorganization on October 28, 2026, in a release reporting its third-quarter results. The company expects it to reduce projected 2027 annualized operating expenses by more than 50%, with a target of approximately $70 million to $75 million in 2027 operating expenses, excluding stock-based compensation.

The reorganization was implemented in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is meant to prioritize consumer marketing for VIZZ, the company's aceclidine eye drop for presbyopia. The company expects substantially all of the work to be completed in that quarter, with an estimated $5 million in one-time net restructuring charges. The release says the company is streamlining the organization while keeping the capabilities needed to sell VIZZ.

Leadership change

President and Chief Executive Officer Eef Schimmelpennink will step down effective December 1, 2026. Chief Financial Officer Dan Chevallard will become Interim President and Chief Executive Officer on the same date. Schimmelpennink will lead the organization through the reorganization and continue as a strategic advisor into 2027. The release quotes him saying he has more than 25 years in biotechnology and nearly six years leading LENZ, and that he is leaving to devote more time to other passions.

Sales, spending and cash

Third-quarter product sales were $2.6 million on over 38,000 paid prescriptions, with product sales up approximately 50% and paid prescriptions up approximately 51% over the second quarter of 2026. Net product sales for the nine months ended September 30, 2026 were $6.0 million. The company had no product sales in the same periods of 2025.

Spending has risen with the launch. Selling, general and administrative expenses were $35.8 million in the third quarter and $120.2 million for the nine months, against $27.6 million and $51.5 million a year earlier. Research and development expense was zero in both 2026 periods, compared with $3.8 million in the third quarter of 2025 and $18.7 million for the nine months of 2025.

Net loss was $31.0 million for the third quarter, or $0.99 per share, and $104.4 million for the nine months, or $3.33 per share. A year earlier the nine-month loss was $46.2 million, or $1.65 per share. License revenue was $0.8 million in the third quarter, compared with $12.5 million in the same period of 2025, and $4.8 million for the nine months, against $17.5 million a year earlier. Part of the 2025 license revenue came from upfront and milestone payments.

Cost of sales was $1.8 million for the nine months, and the company says that total includes non-recurring costs from a manufacturing process transition. Direct product cost of sales for VIZZ was $0.4 million of the nine-month total. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities were $197.3 million at September 30, 2026, made up of cash and cash equivalents of $30,553 thousand and marketable securities of $166,750 thousand. Total stockholders' equity was $191,999 thousand, against $284,339 thousand at December 31, 2025.

The company's full-year 2025 figures from its annual report show revenue of $19.1 million, against none in 2024, and a net loss of $82.1 million, against $49.8 million. Cash used in operations was $69.2 million in 2025, up from $59.4 million in 2024.

The market VIZZ entered

The FDA approved VIZZ on July 31, 2025, and the company launched it in August 2025. The annual report calls it the first and only FDA-approved aceclidine-based eye drop for presbyopia and says its U.S. patent protection runs to 2044 at a minimum.

The competition is no longer a single product. The annual report lists Vuity, launched by AbbVie, Qlosi, marketed by Orasis, and a generic version of Vuity launched by Amneal Therapeutics. It also notes that the FDA approved Yuvezzi in January 2026, which the annual report said Tenpoint Therapeutics may launch in the second quarter of 2026.

LENZ launched telehealth prescribing and a nationwide TV advertising campaign in July 2026 to reach patients. The release says the telehealth channel contributed more than 50% of the incremental prescriptions in the third quarter over the second. The reorganization keeps consumer marketing as the company's priority.
