Teva's branded drugs carry the story as generics shrink
Weltruza's approval and a refinancing round out a busy year. The 2027 Medicare price on Austedo is the number that matters most.
The technology
Teva is two companies in one. It is a large maker of generic drugs and biosimilars, and it is building a branded business in neuroscience and immunology. The branded side carries the growth. Austedo, Ajovy and Uzedy together had more than $1 billion of second-quarter revenue, up 43% in local currency, while global generics fell 15%.
The pipeline is mostly made of known mechanisms in new forms. Weltruza puts olanzapine into a monthly shot under the skin with no post-injection monitoring. Duvakitug, partnered with Sanofi, blocks TL1A in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. TEV '408 is a Teva-discovered antibody against IL-15. Ecopipam, bought with Emalex, is a D1 receptor blocker for Tourette syndrome.
The odds
Weltruza is approved, and ecopipam is under FDA review with a target date late in the first quarter of 2027. The European Medicines Agency is also reviewing the olanzapine injection after accepting the application in May 2026, and the BioXcel film Teva bid for has an FDA action date of Nov. 14 for at-home use, pending the bankruptcy sale. Drugs that reach a filing are approved 90.6% of the time, according to BIO, Informa and QLS data for 2011 to 2020, and 93.6% in rare diseases.
Duvakitug is in four phase 3 trials. Its 44-week phase 2b maintenance data showed 58% clinical remission in ulcerative colitis at 900 mg, but without a placebo arm. The same BIO data put the odds of a phase 3 program reaching a filing at 57.8%. TEV '408 is earlier: its celiac study met its primary endpoint with a confidence interval of 0.06 to 0.84, and only 28.9% of phase 2 drugs reach phase 3.
The money
Teva had $3,655 million of cash and $16,593 million of debt at June 30, 2026, for net debt of $12,938 million. Its ratio of debt to debt plus equity was 68%. Second-quarter free cash flow was $622 million, and 2026 guidance calls for $2.0 billion to $2.4 billion.
The company is refinancing. In September it priced about $4.9 billion of new senior notes to redeem older notes, including series with coupons of 6.750% to 8.125%. All three major rating agencies have returned Teva to investment grade. Teva has also used outside money to fund research, including $400 million from Blackstone Life Sciences for duvakitug.
The risks
Austedo is the largest brand, and its Medicare negotiated price takes effect on Jan. 1, 2027. Teva's legal challenge to the negotiation program was decided on appeal on Aug. 18: the D.C. Circuit held that CMS may treat Austedo and Austedo XR as one drug and that the program does not deprive Teva of a protected property interest, and it sent a narrow question on the "bona fide marketing" requirement back to the lower court. The October agreement with the U.S. government on Medicaid prices adds another pricing commitment whose terms are not public.
Generics are shrinking as competition for lenalidomide grows, and the Emalex deal produced $726 million of second-quarter expenses, which pushed Teva to a GAAP loss. The funding deals with Blackstone and Royalty Pharma give away part of future sales.
Our read
Teva's story is now about whether a handful of branded drugs can grow faster than generics decline and federal pricing bites. The second quarter suggests they can for now. The next proof points are concrete: Weltruza's launch, the ecopipam decision and the first phase 3 data for duvakitug. The balance sheet is better than it was, and the refinancing pushes out maturities, but leverage is still high for a company in the middle of building a new business. We would weigh the 2027 Austedo price change heavily, since it hits the biggest single source of growth.
