IDEAYA's eye cancer drug is near the market. The pipeline must do the rest
Darovasertib beat standard care in a randomized trial and an NDA is under way. With $1.24 billion in cash, IDEAYA is now betting on lung and pancreatic cancer programs to grow beyond a small market.
The technology
IDEAYA is a precision oncology company. It picks cancers defined by a specific genetic change and builds drugs, mostly oral small molecules plus a few antibody drug conjugates, to exploit that change. Its pipeline is built on synthetic lethality and ADCs.
The lead drug, darovasertib, inhibits PKC, the signal that runs downstream of the GNAQ and GNA11 mutations found in nearly all uveal melanomas. Given with crizotinib, a cMET inhibitor, it beat investigator's choice in the randomized OptimUM-02 trial: median progression-free survival was 6.9 months versus 3.1 months, hazard ratio 0.42. Behind it are IDE849, a DLL3 antibody drug conjugate for small cell lung cancer, and IDE892, a PRMT5 inhibitor for MTAP-deleted tumors that IDEAYA is pairing with two Roche RAS drugs.
The odds
Darovasertib has done the hard part. A positive randomized registrational trial and an application under the FDA's real-time oncology review program put it in the final stage, where historical data show 90.6% of filed drugs win approval. IDEAYA expects to complete the submission in the second half of 2026. Overall survival data were immature at the cutoff, with an interim analysis due in mid-2027.
The rest of the pipeline is earlier. IDE849 has an FDA-aligned phase 3 design but no data yet from IDEAYA's own trial. IDE892 has not reported human efficacy data. Phase 3 programs historically reach a filing 57.8% of the time, and phase 1 programs reach phase 2 52.0% of the time.
The money
IDEAYA had about $1.24 billion in cash and securities at June 30, 2026 after a June offering that raised $323.4 million net. It guides to runway into 2030. Operating activities used $163.4 million in the first half, and second-quarter R&D spending was $108.7 million. Revenue is collaboration income from Servier, which holds darovasertib rights outside the U.S. and shares development costs.
The risks
The main risk is market size. GlobalData analysts forecast $709 million of darovasertib sales by 2032 and call the metastatic market small. Immunocore's Kimmtrak already serves HLA-A*02:01-positive patients. Growth depends on earlier settings: the adjuvant phase 3 OptimUM-11 dosed its first patient in September, and IDEAYA may skip a full neoadjuvant phase 3 and seek guideline inclusion instead.
IDEAYA has not generated any revenue from product sales and has never launched a drug. Its pipeline beyond darovasertib depends on early combination data in hard cancers such as pancreatic and small cell lung cancer.
Our read
IDEAYA has one drug near the finish line, a strong balance sheet and a broad set of follow-on bets. Darovasertib looks likely to reach the U.S. market. The bigger question is whether a rare eye cancer can support the company's spending, or whether IDE849 and the MTAP programs must carry the next stage. The NDA completion, IDE849's first data and the November R&D day are the next tests.
The company has moved its spending toward those bets. In August it said it may rely on published neoadjuvant data instead of finishing the OptimUM-10 phase 3, and could shift money to the DLL3 registrational trial and MTAP and KRAS combinations. Its partnership choices point the same way: two Roche Group supply deals give IDE892 access to RAS-directed partners without a license fee. That is a sensible use of cash for a company of this size, but it means IDEAYA's value in 2027 and 2028 will depend on early oncology data, which historically fails more often than it succeeds. A clean darovasertib launch would give it time and revenue to absorb those failures.
