Equillium, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQ) reported first-quarter 2026 financial results on May 13, 2026 and appointed Snehal Naik, Ph.D., as Chief Development Officer. The company reported cash and cash equivalents of $61.3 million at March 31, 2026, compared with $30.3 million at December 31, 2025. The release was furnished in an 8-K.
The new Chief Development Officer
Naik will lead clinical development and medical strategy across the pipeline, with responsibility for advancing EQ504 into the clinic and progressing future programs. The company says she has more than 15 years of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry experience, spanning early discovery through late-stage clinical development and product lifecycle management. That experience includes leadership of global development programs in immunology and inflammatory diseases.
Most recently, Naik served as Senior Vice President and Head of Clinical Development at Ventyx Biosciences, where she led all development activities across a portfolio of immunology assets. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Temple University School of Medicine.
The private placement
In March 2026, Equillium completed a private placement financing of $35 million with RA Capital Management. The release says the proceeds provide additional capital to support the advancement of EQ504 through clinical milestones and the company's development strategy. The release names no underwriter or placement agent for the private placement, and it names no lender, financial advisor or counsel for it.
The EQ504 program
The company is advancing EQ504, a potent and selective AhR modulator with potential for targeted local delivery in gastrointestinal diseases, including ulcerative colitis, and inhaled formulations for inflammatory lung diseases. The company plans to start a Phase 1 proof-of-mechanism study in mid-2026, with data expected about six months later.
Equillium presented two EQ504 abstracts at IMMUNOLOGY2026, the annual meeting of the American Association of Immunologists in April 2026. The company says the preclinical findings show that EQ504 promotes immune tolerance through induction of IL-10 and IL-22, supports anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization, and enhances epithelial repair and barrier function. The data also showed functional differentiation from clinically validated AhR-targeting agents.
Equillium is also evaluating further advancement of EQ302, an oral bi-specific inhibitor of IL-15 and IL-21 being developed for gastrointestinal indications, including celiac disease.
First-quarter results
Research and development expenses for the first quarter of 2026 were $3.0 million, compared with $5.9 million a year earlier. The company says the decrease was driven primarily by the wind down of its clinical studies in 2025. General and administrative expenses were $2.6 million, compared with $2.9 million, a decrease the company attributes mainly to lower legal and other professional fees.
The net loss for the quarter was $5.3 million, or $(0.06) per basic and diluted share, compared with $8.7 million, or $(0.24) per share, in the first quarter of 2025. The company says the decrease came primarily from lower research and development and general and administrative expenses.
Financial background
The XBRL data in the 10-K show revenue of $41.1 million for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024, and a net loss of $22.4 million for 2025 against $8.1 million for 2024. Cash from operations was negative $22.7 million in 2025 and negative $19.0 million in 2024. Year-end cash and cash equivalents were $18.1 million for 2024, and short-term investments were $4.5 million at the end of 2024.
What the release does not show
EQ504 has no human data. The IL-10 and IL-22 findings and the claimed differentiation from other AhR agents come from preclinical work reported in two conference abstracts, and the release gives no numbers for them. The mid-2026 Phase 1 start is a plan, and a proof-of-mechanism study is not an efficacy trial. The lower research and development spending came from winding down clinical studies in 2025, not from new progress.
Cash rose from $30.3 million at year-end after the $35 million private placement, whose pricing and share terms the release does not give, so the dilution cannot be measured from these sources. The company says its cash is capable of funding currently planned operations into 2029, based on assumptions and estimates that it says may prove inaccurate. The 10-K data show $22.7 million of cash used in operations in 2025.
