Bicara Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: BCAX) is the defendant, with Biocon Ltd, in a patent inventorship suit filed by Y-Trap, Inc. The 10-Q filed August 11, 2026 gives the case as Y-Trap, Inc. v. Biocon Ltd and Bicara Therapeutics Inc., No. 24-cv-12678, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Y-Trap filed the complaint on October 22, 2024.

The suit reaches patents tied to ficerafusp alfa. Bicara, incorporated in Delaware in December 2018 and based in Boston, calls it its lead program: a bifunctional antibody that combines a clinically validated epidermal growth factor receptor directed monoclonal antibody bound to a human transforming growth factor beta ligand trap. Bicara says it will continue to defend the case vigorously.

The case

Y-Trap filed an operative amended complaint on January 31, 2025. It asks the court to correct the inventorship of a number of patents based on a license from The Johns Hopkins University, including patents licensed to Bicara that relate to ficerafusp alfa. The complaint also alleges unfair trade practices under Chapter 93A of the Massachusetts General Laws, unjust enrichment and civil conspiracy.

Y-Trap seeks damages, including compensatory, enhanced and punitive damages, an order correcting inventorship, costs and attorney's fees, and other equitable and injunctive relief. The 10-Q gives no dollar figure.

Defendants

The defendants are Bicara Therapeutics Inc. and Biocon Ltd. The 10-Q names no individual defendants. Biocon is also a business partner of Bicara. The 10-Q says Bicara entered a master services agreement with Biocon in December 2020, under which Biocon provided research and development, clinical trial, regulatory and manufacturing services. Bicara also has contract manufacturing agreements with Biocon subsidiaries. A risk factor on collaborations lists the mutual termination of the Contract Transfer and License Agreement with Biocon as something that could delay commercialization of ficerafusp alfa.

Where it stands

Bicara and Biocon moved to dismiss all of Y-Trap's claims on February 28, 2025. On September 30, 2025, the court denied Bicara's motion. Bicara answered the operative complaint on October 30, 2025, and discovery is ongoing. The 10-Q reports no trial date.

Bicara has also challenged a related patent at the patent office. On July 15, 2026, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board instituted a post-grant review petition that Bicara brought against The Johns Hopkins University, No. PGR2026-00025. It concerns U.S. Patent 12,295,968, in a patent family alleged to be licensed to Y-Trap. Bicara challenges all claims of that patent under 35 U.S.C. § 112. The review is a separate proceeding from the Massachusetts case, and Bicara brought it against the university, not against Y-Trap. The 10-Q anticipates a final written decision on or before July 14, 2027.

Why it matters to shareholders

Bicara describes itself as a clinical-stage company whose business is highly dependent on ficerafusp alfa. The 10-Q's risk factors say that if Bicara or its licensors fail in defending an inventorship claim, the company could pay monetary damages and could lose valuable intellectual property rights, such as exclusive ownership of, or the right to use, intellectual property that is important to its product candidates. They add that even a successful defense could bring substantial costs and distract management.

The 10-Q says Bicara had no contingency reserves for any litigation liabilities as of June 30, 2026. It does not discuss insurance or indemnification for it. A patent risk factor cites the case and refers readers to the Legal Proceedings section. It also says Bicara received a letter in August 2024 alleging that ficerafusp alfa infringes certain third-party patents.
