Aprea Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: APRE) reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026, in a release issued through GlobeNewswire on August 12, 2026. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania company describes itself as a clinical-stage precision medicine oncology company focused on targeted therapies for biomarker-defined cancers. Its headline figures were $41.2 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026, and a net loss of $3.6 million, or $(0.07) per basic share, for the quarter.

The clinical program

APR-1051 is being tested in ACESOT-1051, a multi-center, open-label Phase 1 study. Oren Gilad, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, said: "Having observed early signs of clinical activity for APR-1051, we are now expanding the ongoing ACESOT-1051 trial." The company said enrollment is accelerating and that the number of active clinical sites is expanding from three to ten. It expects enrollment to reach 6 to 10 patients per month by Q4 of 2026. The next clinical data update is expected at a medical meeting in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Aprea also plans to enroll at least 50 patients with uterine serous carcinoma (USC) or cyclin E-overexpressing platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC). It anticipates completing dose escalation and the backfill expansion in the second quarter of 2027. The release says APR-1051 will also be studied in combination, with immune checkpoint therapy in HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and with a standard-of-care chemotherapy in colorectal cancer.

The second program, ATRN-119, is an ATR inhibitor. During 2025, Aprea determined a recommended Phase 2 monotherapy dose of 1,100 mg once daily in the ABOYA-119 Phase 1/2a study, and then closed that study to focus on APR-1051. The company is now considering ATRN-119 in combination approaches. It says it is in discussions with leading academic centers about investigator-initiated studies with immuno-oncology agents, chemotherapy, antibody-drug conjugates and radiation. An early-stage DYRK1A/B inhibitor could enter IND-enabling studies in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to available resources.

Financial position

Cash and cash equivalents were $41.2 million at June 30, 2026, compared with $14.6 million at December 31, 2025. Aprea believes that balance will be sufficient to meet projected operating expenses and capital expenditure requirements into the first quarter of 2028. The release ties its expanded enrollment to the $30 million private placement that closed in the first quarter of 2026. The text of the release names no placement agent or underwriter for that financing.

The operating loss for the quarter was $4.0 million, compared with $3.4 million in the second quarter of 2025. Research and development expense was $2.5 million, up from $1.9 million, mainly because of higher ACESOT-1051 costs, partly offset by lower spending on the ABOYA-119 trial, which has been closed. General and administrative expense was $1.6 million in each of the two quarters. The company reported a net loss of $3.6 million, or $(0.07) per basic share, on approximately 53.5 million weighted-average shares. A year earlier, the net loss was $3.2 million, or $(0.53) per basic share, on approximately 6.1 million shares.

The annual report gives the longer view. Aprea reported a net loss of $12.6 million for 2025 and $13.0 million for 2024. Cash flow from operations was negative $12.9 million in 2025 and negative $13.6 million in 2024. Cash of $41.2 million came from a private placement, and the company still reports quarterly losses.

What the data do and do not show

The efficacy evidence is early. The annual report describes two unconfirmed partial responses, at the 150 mg and 220 mg doses, both in patients with PPP2R1A-mutated endometrial cancer, and calls the results preliminary. ACESOT-1051 is an open-label Phase 1 study with safety and dose selection as its primary objectives. The release gives no response rate, patient count or duration of response, and "manageable tolerability" is the company's wording with no adverse-event figures. With ATRN-119 shelved, the pipeline rests on one clinical asset, and the next data update is not due until the fourth quarter of 2026. The full second-quarter release and the annual report business section are available on the SEC website.
