Hepion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a medical diagnostic company headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey. It was previously focused on developing drug therapy for chronic liver diseases with rencofilstat, a cyclophilin inhibitor. The company began wind-down activities in its ASCEND-NASH trial in April 2024 because it did not have sufficient funding to complete the study, and the trial closed in August 2024. In May 2025 it entered a license agreement with New Day Diagnostics LLC for diagnostic tests for celiac disease, respiratory multiplex (Covid/Influenza A/B and RSV), Helicobacter pylori and hepatocellular carcinoma. The celiac, respiratory multiplex and H. pylori tests have CE marks and are eligible for sale in the European Union and certain other markets, but not currently in the United States. In May 2025 it sold its rencofilstat patent assets to Panetta Partners Limited for a nominal amount, and in February 2026 it licensed liver disease diagnostic assets from Cirna Diagnostics, LLC. The company says it has no commercialization or sales and marketing capabilities and owns no manufacturing facilities.
