Traws Pharma, Inc. (NASDAQ: [TRAW](https://aibio.space/companies/traws-pharma/)) announced on May 27, 2026 that it is advancing a proprietary broad-spectrum combination antiviral agent for Hantavirus and Ebola outbreaks. In the [press release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1130598/000110465926066623/tm2615712d1_ex99-1.htm), the company said both components of the combination have been safely evaluated in human studies as single agents. The combination is at a non-clinical stage, and the company is evaluating it in validated animal models. The release reports no results from those studies, so the activity against hantavirus, Ebola and Lassa is a possibility, not a finding.

## How the combination works

The company describes a "dual-strike" mechanism. One component dynamically drains the host cell's natural nucleotide supply, creating a localized state of nucleotide starvation. Deprived of natural building blocks, the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase is forced to use the active nucleoside-mimic provided by the second component.

Chief Science Officer C. David Pauza, PhD, said that reducing the competition between natural nucleotides and the active drug lowers the effective concentration needed to halt replication. He said this maximizes therapeutic potency against Hantavirus, Ebola and Lassa, while minimizing potential toxicity and achieving high efficacy at lower doses.

Chief Medical Officer Robert R. Redfield, MD, a former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said: "By pairing a powerful host-targeted mechanism with nucleotide antivirals, we are presenting a formidable barrier to viral replication and resistance."

## Development and access plans

Traws is running non-clinical work in validated animal models of Hantavirus and Ebola. Those studies will be conducted in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) and Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) laboratories. Chief Executive Officer Iain Dukes said the company is also scaling up chemical development and manufacturing so that it can supply the combination to appropriate health agencies for immediate use and potential stockpiling.

Traws plans to build on its relationship with Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to develop sustainable local manufacturing of drug products. The release also cites ongoing interactions with the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and planned interactions with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The company says these steps aim to streamline regulatory pathways and support equitable access across the African continent.

## Company background

Its lead program, tivoxavir marboxil (TXM), is in development as a once-monthly oral prophylactic agent for influenza prevention, with additional potential as a single-dose therapy for seasonal flu or H5N1 bird flu. TXM targets the influenza cap-dependent endonuclease. The annual report says TXM was tested in a Phase 1 study in Australia, and the company reported in 2025 that oral TXM was effective against a highly virulent A/H5N1 bird flu in animal models.

The annual report describes ratutrelvir as an inhibitor of the main protease (also known as 3CL protease) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causative agent in COVID-19. Narazaciclib (ON 123300) is a multi-targeted kinase inhibitor for solid tumors and hematological malignancies, and rigosertib is being investigated in various cancers.

## Financial position

The [XBRL financial data](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1130598/000110465926043832/) for the company show 2025 revenue of $2.8 million and net income of $9.2 million, with cash used in operations of $18.2 million. For 2024, revenue was $226,000, the net loss was $166.5 million and cash used in operations was $29.8 million.

The company said it is finalizing its data while it scales production.

## What the announcement does not show

The claim that both components were safely evaluated in humans covers each drug alone. The combination has not been tested in people, and the release does not name the two drugs or give doses, so a reader cannot check that claim. The statement that the mechanism lowers the effective concentration is the company's, with no supporting numbers. The planned CDC and African regulator interactions are plans, and the release does not say any agency has agreed to a path or to stockpile the drug. A new program needs funding, and the company used $18.2 million of cash in operations in 2025, which points to more share sales and dilution. The 2025 net income of $9.2 million is not cash from the business.
