Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: [PFE](https://aibio.space/companies/pfizer-pfe/)) said on April 29, 2025 that it is adding about $1.2 billion of expected savings to its ongoing cost realignment program and expects one-time costs of about $1.6 billion to reach them. The company reported the changes in a [Form 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/78003/000007800325000111/pfe-20250429.htm) under Item 2.05, the item titled Cost Associated with Exit or Disposal Activities. The same filing furnished Pfizer's first-quarter 2025 earnings release.

## What the filing says about the restructuring program

Pfizer calls the effort the Realigning Our Cost Base Program. The new $1.2 billion of savings is expected by the end of 2027. Pfizer says the savings are designed to cut costs mainly in selling, information and administrative expenses (SI&A). The filing ties the plan in large part to enhanced digital enablement, including automation and artificial intelligence, and to simpler business processes.

The one-time costs for this part of the program run through 2027 and total approximately $1.6 billion. Pfizer says they are primarily cash expenditures for severance, digital enablement and implementation.

Pfizer also said it remains on track to deliver net cost savings of approximately $4.5 billion by the end of 2025. With the added target, it now expects total net cost savings of approximately $5.7 billion from the program through 2027. The filing explains that net cost savings are measured against the midpoint of Pfizer's 2023 SI&A and R&D expense guidance, which the company gave on August 1, 2023.

## Research and development reorganization

In the first quarter of 2025, Pfizer expanded the program to cover its research and development (R&D) organization. The company said it wants to simplify the structure and sharpen the focus of R&D, and that it found more room to improve productivity through digital enablement and simpler processes. Savings from the R&D changes are expected by the end of 2026 and to total approximately $500 million. Pfizer expects to reinvest that money in R&D programs. One-time costs for the R&D work are expected through 2026 and to total approximately $600 million, again primarily cash expenditures for severance, digital enablement and implementation.

The filing carries a warning. Pfizer says its estimates of costs and savings, and their timing, rest on a number of assumptions, and actual results may differ. It may also incur other charges or cash expenditures that it does not currently contemplate.

## First-quarter results and use of capital

The earnings release, filed as Exhibit 99, reports first-quarter 2025 revenues of $13.7 billion, an 8% decrease from the prior-year quarter. Reported diluted earnings per share were $0.52, and adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.92. Pfizer attributed the operational decline mainly to lower Paxlovid revenues, partly offset by growth from the Vyndaqel family, Comirnaty and other products.

Pfizer reaffirmed its full-year 2025 guidance, including revenues of $61.0 to $64.0 billion and adjusted diluted EPS of $2.80 to $3.00. The guidance does not include any potential effect from future tariffs and trade policy changes.

On capital, Pfizer said it invested $2.2 billion in internal R&D projects and approximately $90 million in business development transactions in the first three months of 2025. It paid $2.4 billion in cash dividends, or $0.43 per share. No share repurchases have been completed to date in 2025. As of April 29, 2025, the remaining repurchase authorization is $3.3 billion, and current guidance does not anticipate buybacks this year. Pfizer said it has actively de-levered and, as of March 30, 2025, is below its previously stated gross leverage target.

## Who is involved

Dr. Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, said: "We continued to execute with focus and discipline against our strategic priorities, including strengthening our R&D organization and driving improved productivity." David Denton, CFO and EVP of Pfizer, said the company is "currently trending towards the upper end of our 2025 Adjusted diluted EPS guidance range." Margaret M. Madden, Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary and Chief Governance Counsel, signed the 8-K.

## About the company
