Kiora Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: [KPRX](https://aibio.space/companies/kiora-pharmaceuticals/)) reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2026, and provided a clinical update on May 8, 2026. The results were released as [Exhibit 99.1 to a Form 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1372514/000137251426000048/ex991-pressreleasemarch312.htm). The company ended the quarter with $13.9 million in cash and short-term investments and said it has runway to fund operations into late 2028, well beyond the anticipated clinical data readouts from both of its ongoing trials. The release lists the quarter's highlights as ABACUS-2 enrollment, the publication of ABACUS-1 results, progress in the KLARITY study and the runway.

## Clinical programs

Kiora said enrollment in the Phase 2 ABACUS-2 study of KIO-301 remains very active, and it is expanding the network of trial sites to meet demand. Brian Strem, Ph.D., the president and chief executive officer, said: "Recruitment in our ABACUS-2 study continues to advance, with close to 50% already completed, ongoing or scheduled to be followed by dose escalation of the drug in our second cohort of patients." He said the company is also working with its partners to prepare for potential future global registration studies and a hoped-for commercial launch.

The release says publication of ABACUS-1 clinical trial results in Nature Medicine in April provided external validation of KIO-301's potential for vision restoration in patients with late-stage retinitis pigmentosa. In the Phase 2 KLARITY study of KIO-104, Kiora is approaching a pre-defined safety review that it expects will allow advancement to the higher dose cohort. The company says it believes KIO-104 has the potential to address significant unmet need in inflammatory retinal diseases.

## Financing and runway

Subsequent to the end of the quarter, Kiora completed a strategic equity investment from Perceptive Advisors and ADAR1, and raised an additional $5.0 million in gross proceeds from it. Melissa Tosca, the chief financial officer, said the company's cash position, expected collaboration reimbursements and the capital raised after quarter end support its runway into late 2028.

## First quarter results

Research and development expenses were approximately $2.1 million, before recognizing $1.2 million in reimbursable expenses from Théa Open Innovation. That compares with $2.5 million, before recognizing $2.0 million in reimbursable expenses from Théa, in the first quarter of 2025. The release attributes the change primarily to the timing of clinical activities and collaboration credits. General and administrative expenses were approximately $1.6 million, compared with $1.5 million in the first quarter of 2025.

The company recorded $1.5 million in collaboration receivables from Théa and approximately $2.0 million in tax and other receivables.

## Balance sheet at March 31, 2026

The condensed consolidated balance sheet, which is unaudited for March 31, 2026, shows cash and cash equivalents of $10,955,359, compared with $8,696,570 at December 31, 2025. Short-term investments were $2,916,701, compared with $8,392,513 at year-end. Total current assets were $18,682,848, compared with $21,748,448 at December 31, 2025. Total assets were $21,227,089, compared with $24,253,300. Total liabilities were $7,292,528, compared with $8,126,764 at year-end. Prepaid expenses and other current assets were $1,206,339, compared with $1,141,804 at year-end. Accounts payable were $594,874, accrued expenses were $2,025,173, and contingent consideration was $2,946,743 at March 31, 2026.

## The risks ahead

Kiora says its runway extends into late 2028. That is the company's view, and it rests on the cash position, expected collaboration reimbursements and the capital raised after quarter end, which included a $5.0 million equity investment from Perceptive Advisors and ADAR1. The release gives no calendar dates for the trial readouts or for any registration study. It lists as risks the ability to run trials on time, the sufficiency of cash for specified periods, and the chance that approvals or success are not achieved on a timely basis or at all.
