Kiora Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: [KPRX](https://aibio.space/companies/kiora-pharmaceuticals/)) announced on September 8, 2026 that it has appointed Keith J. Lane, MBA, as Executive Vice President of Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs. The company disclosed the appointment in a Form 8-K filed the same day, with the press release attached as [Exhibit 99.1](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1372514/000137251426000079/ex991-pressreleasekeithlan.htm). Lane has over 20 years of experience in ophthalmic drug development, clinical development and operations, and regulatory strategy across Phase 1 through Phase 4 clinical trials.

## Background and role

Lane joins Kiora from Ora, Inc., an ophthalmology-focused clinical research organization, where he most recently served as Chief Scientific Officer. The release says that during his tenure he oversaw clinical operations and regulatory strategy for more than 60 ophthalmic trials, including 12 global Phase 3 pivotal studies that supported three new drug application submissions and one biologics license application submission. His experience spans small molecules, biologics, gene therapies and cell therapies across retinal disease, inherited retinal disease, glaucoma, optic neuropathies and inflammatory eye conditions. He earned an MBA in health sector management, with honors, from Boston University's Questrom School of Business and a Bachelor of Science from Bates College.

Kiora's chief executive, Brian M. Strem, Ph.D., said Lane brings "the ability to connect clinical strategy with trial execution." Strem added that Lane has built a network of ophthalmic key opinion leaders who could add further value to the pipeline.

Lane's responsibilities cover US and global clinical development and registration studies for the current pipeline. According to the release, that includes supporting KIO-301 for retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited retinal diseases, as needed by Kiora's partners, and helping advance potential future pipeline assets.

## The pipeline he will support

Kiora's annual report on Form 10-K describes the company as a clinical-stage specialty pharmaceutical company developing and commercializing therapies for retinal diseases. Its lead program, KIO-301, is a photoswitch small molecule with an initial focus on later stages of vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Kiora partnered KIO-301 with Théa Open Innovation (TOI) in January 2024. The Phase 2 ABACUS-2 trial is a 36 patient, multicenter, randomized, controlled study enrolling patients with ultra-low vision or no light perception, and enrollment is ongoing. The annual report estimates that more than 3.4 million patients globally have an inherited retinal disease leading to significant or permanent vision loss.

Kiora is also developing KIO-104, a DHODH inhibitor formulated for intravitreal delivery, for retinal inflammatory diseases. The KLARITY trial, an open-label, multiple dose study in patients with macular edema, began enrolling in the second quarter of 2025, and dosing began in the third quarter of 2025. The company says KIO-101, an ophthalmic topical eye drop for ocular manifestations of autoimmune diseases, is being considered for strategic partnering.

## Financial position

The annual report's financial data show revenue of $0 for 2025, compared with $16.0 million for 2024. Research and development expense was $10.8 million in 2025 and $7.8 million in 2024. Kiora reported a net loss of $10.8 million for 2025, against net income of $3.6 million for 2024. Operating activities used $10.0 million of cash in 2025 and provided $8.6 million in 2024. Year-end cash and cash equivalents were $8.7 million for 2025 and $3.8 million for 2024. At June 30, 2026, cash and cash equivalents were $7.1 million and short-term investments were $9.8 million.

## The risks ahead

The hire does not change Kiora's finances. The company reported a net loss of $10.8 million and revenue of $0 for 2025, and operations used $10.0 million of cash. At June 30, 2026, cash and cash equivalents were $7.1 million and short-term investments were $9.8 million. The release gives no dates for the clinical and registration studies Lane will oversee. ABACUS-2 enrollment is still ongoing, and KIO-301 is partnered with Théa Open Innovation. Kiora still has to show results from its clinical programs, and the filings do not say how the new role will change that.
