## A large loss behind strong revenue

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE: [EBS](https://aibio.space/companies/emergent-biosolutions/)) reported second quarter 2026 results on August 5, 2026. Total revenues were $234.3 million, up 66% from $140.9 million a year earlier. The net loss was $180.2 million, against $12.0 million, and the loss per diluted share was $(3.49), against $(0.22). The company says the loss was largely due to a $191.3 million impairment of long-lived assets. The impairment is a non-cash charge tied to the NARCAN asset group within the Commercial reporting unit. Adjusted net income was $30.9 million, up from $13.2 million, and adjusted EBITDA was $96.5 million. The company's own adjusted figures exclude the impairment and other items, so they sit well above the reported loss. Revenue growth came from smallpox countermeasures. Smallpox MCM product sales were $101.6 million, up from $40.6 million, and Other Products rose to $54.1 million from $6.2 million. The company credits accelerated contract modifications secured with the U.S. government. Year to date, total revenues were $390.4 million, up from $363.1 million, but the net loss was $(173.4) million, against net income of $56.0 million a year earlier.

## Naloxone falls and the restructuring follows

Naloxone product sales fell to $52.4 million from $67.5 million, a drop of 22%. The company attributes that to lower sales of OTC NARCAN, mostly from an unfavorable price-volume mix in U.S. public interest channels, partly offset by Canadian sales of branded NARCAN and KLOXXADO. The company announced a restructuring to drive efficiencies and align resourcing with current needs. It includes a reduction of approximately 90 roles and is expected to produce annualized savings of approximately $40 million when fully implemented. It also creates a Growth organization that combines research and development, business development and strategy, led by Stephanie Duatschek, Senior Vice President and Chief Global Strategy and Franchise Development Officer, who will become Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer. CEO Joe Papa said in the release that the company is "implementing an organizational restructuring plan." He also said the company is at a "critical juncture" in its turnaround and transformation, primarily stemming from its naloxone business. He described the quarter as strong, citing revenue above the high end of its guidance range.

## Cash, debt and buybacks

Cash and cash equivalents were $139.7 million at June 30, 2026, against $205.4 million at December 31, 2025. Restricted cash was $1.2 million. In the six months ended June 30, 2026, the company repaid $150.0 million under its prior term loan facility and received $145.5 million from new debt issuance, net of lender fees, part of what the company calls a refinanced term loan with a new $150 million facility and an amended asset-backed loan facility. The cash flow statement for those six months shows $18.0 million of purchases of treasury stock, compared with $6.9 million in the first six months of 2025. It also shows a $50.4 million milestone payment from a prior asset acquisition. Net cash from operating activities was $22.3 million, against $95.2 million a year earlier. The company is buying back its own stock while reporting a large net loss, a shrinking cash balance and a restructuring that includes about 90 roles.

## Outlook and the risks it lists

The release revised the full-year 2026 ranges, and most moved the wrong way despite the strong quarter. Total revenues are now $645 million to $675 million, down from a previous range of $720 million to $760 million. The net loss range is now $(245) million to $(225) million, against $(30) million to $(10) million before. Adjusted net income is now $10 million to $30 million, against $45 million to $65 million, and adjusted EBITDA is now $130 million to $150 million, against $155 million to $175 million. The company also gave a third quarter revenue forecast of $110 million to $130 million. The release lists among its forward-looking risks the company's ability to satisfy the conditions of its litigation settlement agreements, including the funds needed to resolve related litigation, along with pending government investigations and its ability to comply with the covenants of its term loan.
