AquaBounty Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: [AQB](https://aibio.space/companies/aquabounty-technologies/)) said on August 6, 2026, that it is expanding its strategic review of its Pioneer, Ohio property to include power infrastructure and energy development. The announcement was issued as a press release, furnished as Exhibit 99.1 to a [Form 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1603978/000160397826000086/aqb-20260806xex99_1.htm). The company said its earlier talks to monetize the property with parties in the aquaculture industry remain ongoing. It said evolving market conditions led it to broaden its evaluation of strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.

## The company

The release describes AquaBounty as having historically focused on enhancing productivity and sustainability in aquaculture through innovative technologies. According to its 10-K, AquaBounty was incorporated in Delaware in December 1991 to research antifreeze proteins, and in 1996 it obtained exclusive licensing rights for a gene construct used to create farm-raised Atlantic salmon with faster growth rates. Its 10-K says it no longer operates any salmon farms, after selling its Indiana Farm in July 2024 and, in March 2025, its Canadian Farms and the intellectual property for its genetically engineered Atlantic salmon.

## The Pioneer site

The release says the property includes access to an existing electrical substation with approximately 50 megawatts of available capacity, competitively priced electricity, and a permit to withdraw 5.25 million gpd of groundwater from a high-capacity underground aquifer. The company says those features could make the site valuable for power generation, energy-intensive industrial uses, data center infrastructure and other development.

The site has a history. AquaBounty paused construction of a 10,000 metric ton salmon farm in Pioneer in June 2023, when the estimated cost to finish rose substantially. Its 10-K for 2025, filed March 31, 2026, says the company's primary remaining asset is its investment in the Ohio Farm Project, which consists of the remaining Ohio Equipment Assets and the land and construction in process. The company also received a non-binding Letter of Interest to purchase its Ohio subsidiary, which it is considering.

## Why the review was widened

Interim Chief Executive Officer David Frank said that demand for reliable power infrastructure has accelerated, "driven in large part by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing." He said the company believes it is prudent to expand the review beyond traditional aquaculture to include parties seeking sites with robust utility infrastructure and abundant water.

The release says the company intends to engage with developers, utilities, independent power producers, infrastructure investors and other strategic partners. Possible transactions include an outright sale of the property, joint development arrangements, long-term leasing or other structures that could realize the value of the site's infrastructure. The company also said it will evaluate opportunities to participate more directly in infrastructure or energy development.

## Financial position

The company's XBRL data show research and development expense of $203,296 for 2024. The net loss was $18.5 million for 2025, compared with $149.2 million for 2024. Cash used in operations was $8.7 million in 2025, compared with $13.9 million in 2024. Year-end cash and cash equivalents were $501,295 at December 31, 2025, compared with $230,362 a year earlier.

The 10-K describes impairment charges of $129.8 million in 2024 and $14.4 million in 2025 by asset group. It also says the Ohio Farm Project is treated as a discontinued operation in the consolidated financial statements.

## The risks ahead

The company has not found a buyer or partner for the Pioneer site, and the release says there can be no assurance that the expanded review will result in any transaction, or that one will be completed on specific terms or within any particular timeframe. Its talks with aquaculture parties are still ongoing. The release lists the ability to identify and negotiate acceptable transactions, market conditions, regulatory approvals and financing availability as risks. The company does not intend to update the market unless its board decides further disclosure is appropriate or required. Cash used in operations was $8.7 million in 2025.
