# Viridian has its approval. Now it has to take patients from Amgen

Lumvoa launched in June with a broad label and a shorter dosing course. An at-home injection follows in 2027, and nearly $1 billion in cash backs both.

## The technology

Viridian makes antibodies against the IGF-1 receptor, the same target as Amgen's Tepezza, for thyroid eye disease (TED). The disease causes swelling behind the eyes that leads to bulging, double vision and pain. Lumvoa (veligrotug-vvze) was [approved on June 26](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm) for TED regardless of activity or duration. It is given as [five 30 to 45 minute infusions](https://medcitynews.com/2026/06/viridian-thyroid-eye-disease-veligrotug-lumvoa-fda-approval-inflammation-vrdn/), against eight longer ones for Tepezza.

Elegrobart is the follow-on: a half-life-extended antibody given under the skin. In REVEAL-2, in chronic TED, [50% and 54% of patients](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526205099/d20977dex991.htm) on four-week and eight-week dosing had a proptosis response at week 24, versus 15% on placebo. REVEAL-1 in active TED showed [54% and 63% versus 18%](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526205010/d149508dex991.htm). Viridian plans an at-home autoinjector.

Beyond TED, the company has two FcRn inhibitors in early development, VRDN-006 and VRDN-008, and an anti-TSHR antibody aimed at TED and Graves' disease, with an [IND planned in the fourth quarter](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm).

## The odds

Lumvoa's regulatory risk is gone. Elegrobart has two positive phase 3 trials and a BLA planned for the first quarter of 2027. Filed applications historically won approval [90.6% of the time](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf) across diseases in the BIO/Informa/QLS data. The open regulatory questions are the label details, such as whether both dosing schedules are approved.

The FcRn programs face the class base rates. Phase 1 programs reached phase 2 52.0% of the time in the same data, and VRDN-008 must show it improves on approved FcRn drugs such as efgartigimod, which Viridian used as its [preclinical comparator](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm).

## The money

Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities were [$981.5 million at June 30](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm). The company lost $127.1 million in the second quarter as selling costs rose to $55.0 million. In May it raised [$394 million gross](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm) from stock and 1.75% convertible notes due 2032, and it [repaid its Hercules loan](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526245186/d111506d8k.htm), about $55.1 million that carried interest of at least 8.95%. The notes pay 1.75% and mature in 2032, and up to [14.7 million shares](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526216709/d154062d8k.htm) could be issued if they convert at the maximum rate. That is meaningful against 113.2 million common shares outstanding at June 30, but it is a cost the company chose over higher-rate debt.

Viridian says its cash plus expected Lumvoa and elegrobart revenue should fund it through profitability. It reported [no product revenue](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm) in the second quarter because the drug was approved four days before quarter end.

## The risks

Competition comes first. Tepezza had [$1.9 billion in 2025 revenue](https://medcitynews.com/2026/06/viridian-thyroid-eye-disease-veligrotug-lumvoa-fda-approval-inflammation-vrdn/), and Amgen is developing subcutaneous options. Viridian set Lumvoa's price [in line with Tepezza](https://pharmaphorum.com/news/fda-clears-viridians-tepezza-rival-thyroid-eye-disease), about $150,000 for a six-month course, so it has to win on convenience and data.

Safety is shared with the class. Hearing impairment occurred in [17% of Lumvoa patients versus 6%](https://medcitynews.com/2026/06/viridian-thyroid-eye-disease-veligrotug-lumvoa-fda-approval-inflammation-vrdn/) on placebo, and the label calls for hearing checks.

Supply is concentrated. Viridian relies on [WuXi Biologics](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000159075026000018/vrdn-20260630.htm) for commercial veligrotug, and its 10-Q warns that the BIOSECURE Act and similar measures could disrupt Chinese suppliers.

## Our read

Viridian took an antibody through two phase 3 trials to approval and has a second product right behind it. The company's own plan rests on new chronic TED patients more than on switching Tepezza users, which is a bigger market but a slower one to build. The infusion and the injection could also compete with each other once elegrobart arrives. The cash removes funding pressure. The test is commercial, starting with third-quarter Lumvoa sales and the [elegrobart filing in early 2027](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1590750/000119312526336691/d174744dex991.htm).
