# Summit's FDA date arrives before its global lung data

Ivonescimab has a Nov 14 goal date on an application whose survival result is a trend. The first-line trial that matters more reads out in the second half of 2026.

## The technology

Summit holds rights to ivonescimab in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan, among other territories, under a [license from Akeso](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000068/smmt-20260630.htm). Ivonescimab is a bispecific antibody that blocks PD-1 and VEGF at once. It was approved in China in May 2024 and is not approved in the U.S. or Europe, per the [July HARMONi update](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000058/a2026_prx0722xharmonidat.htm). Summit's bet is that a single molecule can beat pembrolizumab, today's standard first-line PD-1 drug, in lung cancer.

## The odds

The first test comes soon. The FDA's goal date for the HARMONi application, which covers EGFR-mutated non-squamous lung cancer after an EGFR inhibitor, is Nov 14, 2026. The [overall survival hazard ratio](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000058/a2026_prx0722xharmonidat.htm) improved to 0.76 in the June 2026 cut, but the primary analysis in April 2025 gave 0.79 with a p-value of 0.057, and [Fierce Pharma says](https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/summit-therapeutics-updates-ivonescimab-survival-data-ahead-fda-decision-date) the FDA had asked for a statistically significant survival result. The outlet also reported that the update may extend the review by three months.

The base rate is of limited use here. Across drug types, the BIO/Informa/QLS study [found](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf) that 90.6% of applications reach approval, and 52.4% of drugs that enter phase 3 are eventually approved. Those averages do not describe an application whose main survival endpoint was not formally met.

The bigger test is HARMONi-3, which compares ivonescimab with pembrolizumab in the first-line setting. An [early interim look](https://s206.q4cdn.com/652410165/files/doc_news/Summit-Therapeutics-Reports-Financial-Results-and-Operational-Progress-for-the-First-Quarter-Ended-March-31-2026-2026.pdf) in squamous disease missed the higher interim bar in April, and final progression-free survival is due in the second half of 2026. Akeso's China-only HARMONi-6 trial gave a survival hazard ratio of 0.66, but it does not replace Western data.

## The money

Cash and short-term investments were [$690.7 million at June 30](https://s206.q4cdn.com/652410165/files/doc_news/Summit-Therapeutics-Reports-Financial-Results-and-Operational-Progress-for-the-Second-Quarter-and-Six-Months-Ended-June-30-2026-2026.pdf), down from $713.4 million at the end of 2025. Operating cash use was $263.4 million in the first half. Summit raised $230.8 million through its at-the-market program in the second quarter and a further $68.4 million after June. On July 23 it set up a [new program of up to $380 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000119312526314210/d39231d424b5.htm).

The 10-Q [carries going concern language](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000068/smmt-20260630.htm): cash is "not sufficient to fund the Company's planned operations for a period of at least one year." That is an accounting disclosure rather than a forecast of insolvency, but it confirms the company expects to keep selling stock. No product is approved yet, so Summit has no product revenue.

## The risks

The first risk is the FDA decision. A rejection or an extension would push back revenue and could make financing costlier. [Fierce Pharma](https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/summit-therapeutics-updates-ivonescimab-survival-data-ahead-fda-decision-date) said the FDA has approved other drugs in this setting without statistically significant survival, so the outcome is not settled.

The second is the global lung data. HARMONi-3 is the trial that would support first-line use, and its interim result was a miss against a strict threshold. Squamous cohort final PFS is due in the second half of 2026, and non-squamous PFS in the first half of 2027.

The third is dependence on Akeso, which sponsors the China trials and generated the HARMONi-6 data alone, as the first-quarter release notes. Summit also depends on future equity raises, and the share count was already [797.7 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000068/smmt-20260630.htm) on July 17.

## Our read

Summit is a single-asset company with a drug that has strong data from China and mixed data in the West. The EGFR-mutated filing is a decision about a trend rather than a clean win, and the Nov 14 outcome is hard to call from public numbers. The larger value question belongs to HARMONi-3.

Financing is the quiet constraint. The company has shown it will sell stock steadily, and it has promised more phase 3 trials, which means more spending. Investors will watch whether the FDA keeps its date, whether the full HARMONi data show a confidence interval that excludes 1, and whether HARMONi-3 final PFS arrives before the next raise.
