# Biohaven licensed two programs in six weeks. Now the FDA sets the pace

Deals with SK and Ono carry up to $500 million in near-term payments. An enrollment pause on opakalim and a second FDA review of troriluzole sit over the next six months.

## The technology

Biohaven works on several unrelated platforms. The newest, MoDE and TRAP, are small molecules that degrade extracellular proteins, such as the antibodies that drive autoimmune disease, by using the body's natural liver clearance. The company says the MoDE chemistry [originated at Yale University](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000080/exhibit991-onopressrelease.htm). Its Kv7 platform produced opakalim, a selective Kv7.2/7.3 activator for epilepsy, and it also has a myostatin-pathway inhibitor for obesity, antibody drug conjugates and a Parkinson's program.

The degraders have the most striking early evidence. BHV-1300 cut TSHR-IgG1 autoantibodies by [more than 80% over 12 weeks](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000048/exhibit992may27thpressrele.htm) in a phase 1b study in Graves' disease and is now in phase 3. BHV-1400 lowered galactose-deficient IgA1 about 70% in the first month in IgA nephropathy patients. Neither dataset is randomized, and the thyroid-hormone results in the release covered three patients.

## The odds

Biohaven has two near-term regulatory events. The FDA accepted the troriluzole resubmission in spinocerebellar ataxia and set a goal date in the [first quarter of 2027](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000083/bhvn-20261022.htm), with an advisory committee planned. The drug was rejected once already. Historical data show [93.6% of rare disease applications](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf) that reach the filing stage win approval, but a previous rejection makes this case different.

For opakalim, one study is fully enrolled and [topline data are on track for the second half of 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000077/bhvn-20260904.htm). An FDA enrollment pause, tied to a rodent metabolite, adds uncertainty for the second study. Across all diseases, phase 3 programs reach a filing [57.8% of the time](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf), and epilepsy has its own failure history that these averages do not capture.

## The money

Biohaven is short of cash but has deals to fill the gap. It held [about $270.5 million at June 30, 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000067/a2026q2bhvnearningsprex991.htm), down from [$351.8 million at March 31](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000044/a2026q1bhvnearningsprex991.htm), and operations used $235.0 million in the first half. The SK Biopharmaceuticals license brings [$350 million at closing and $50 million later](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000072/exhibit991-biohavenandskbi.htm), and Ono is to pay [$80 million at closing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000080/bhvn-20261008.htm). As of Biohaven's September filing, the SK deal still needed antitrust clearance.

Debt matters too. The first secured notes carry $250 million in principal, with revenue-linked payments to the purchasers. If the company's 2026 audited statements carry a going concern statement, it would breach a [financial reporting covenant](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000066/bhvn-20260630.htm) unless the purchasers waive it.

## The risks

The enrollment pause is the newest risk, and it came within two weeks of the SK license. The company says the metabolite finding may be [specific to rodents](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000077/bhvn-20260904.htm), but the data are not yet in. A shareholder class action also alleges that Biohaven misstated the outlook for [troriluzole in SCA and for opakalim](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000066/bhvn-20260630.htm); the company has moved to dismiss it.

The second risk is dilution. Biohaven has funded itself through equity sales, notes and now licensing. SK's money lowers the need for new shares, but the license trades away much of opakalim's upside for milestones and [tiered royalties](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000072/bhvn-20260826.htm).

## Our read

Biohaven has turned a cash problem into a set of partnership options. The Ono and SK deals show outside buyers will pay for its assets, even with an open FDA question. The company now depends on four near-term events: the SK closing, the opakalim topline, the troriluzole decision and the [taldefgrobep obesity phase 2 readout](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1935979/000193597926000067/a2026q2bhvnearningsprex991.htm) due in the second half of 2026. A clean run on the first two would ease most of the funding risk. A miss would leave a company with a long pipeline and little cash.
