# AstraZeneca leans on oncology and licensing to carry the post-Farxiga years

Imfinzi and Enhertu are growing fast, and two phase 3 readouts since July point to more cancer launches. The company is also paying for Chinese-developed drugs rather than buying whole companies.

## The technology

AstraZeneca's cancer pipeline covers several approaches. Sone-ve is an antibody-drug conjugate that targets CLDN18.2, and in the phase 3 CLARITY-Gastric01 trial it [improved overall survival](https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2026/sone-ve-improved-survival-in-gastric-cancers.html) in second-line and later gastric cancer. SAFFRON paired Tagrisso with Orpathys, a MET inhibitor developed with HUTCHMED, and the combination [improved progression-free and overall survival](https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2026/tagrisso-orpathys-improved-pfs-os-egfrm-lung.html) over chemotherapy in patients with MET-driven disease after Tagrisso. In July the company also licensed Zegfrovy, an oral inhibitor for EGFR exon 20 insertion lung cancer, from Dizal for [$600 million upfront](https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/dizal-announces-global-exclusive-license-agreement-with-astrazeneca-for-zegfrovy).

Imfinzi has also read out positively in [VOLGA and NILE, two bladder cancer trials](https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/astrazeneca-results-h1-and-q2-2026), and VOLGA is on the ESMO program for October 24. The non-cancer pipeline is less certain. Tozorakimab for COPD has been submitted in the EU and China, and Baxfendy for hypertension has FDA approval, according to the [first-half report](https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/astrazeneca-results-h1-and-q2-2026).

## The odds

BIO, Informa and QLS data show that [57.8% of phase 3 programs reach a filing and 90.6% of filings are approved](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf). Zegfrovy is already approved after platinum chemotherapy, and its first-line application is under review in the U.S. and China. SAFFRON and CLARITY-Gastric01 are the programs that sit between positive topline data and filing.

Neither readout comes with numbers. SAFFRON gave no hazard ratios, and CLARITY-Gastric01 gave none either. The latter also missed an overall-population progression-free survival goal, which regulators will weigh. The company's record this year is mixed: three phase 3 trials missed primary endpoints in the first half, including [Wainua in ATTR-CM](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260708332180/en/update-on-cardio-ttransform-phase-3-trial-of-eplontersen-in-adults-with-transthyretin-mediated-amyloid-cardiomyopathy/).

## The money

First-half total revenue was [$30.67 billion, up 9%](https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/astrazeneca-results-h1-and-q2-2026). Oncology contributed $14.12 billion, up 18%, and BioPharmaceuticals $11.15 billion, down 1%. Core EPS rose 12% to $5.21. Net debt at June 30 was [$26.9 billion](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/astrazeneca--azn/half-year-financial-report/9687613), with $4.89 billion of cash. Reported R&D spending was $7.55 billion for the half, up 12%.

AstraZeneca reconfirmed 2026 guidance of mid-to-high single-digit revenue growth and low double-digit core EPS growth, and says it is on track for its $80 billion revenue ambition in 2030. It also raised its interim dividend by 3 cents to $1.06 per share. That leaves the company paying out cash while carrying net debt, a pattern that holds as long as oncology keeps growing at the rate it has this year.

## The risks

Farxiga is the clearest one. It sold $4.00 billion in the half, down 5%, and the company cited its U.S. loss of exclusivity and Chinese procurement as headwinds. The BioPharmaceuticals division is shrinking while oncology grows.

Pipeline misses are the second, and the first-half report counts three phase 3 trials that failed their primary endpoints. The Wainua miss in ATTR-CM removes a heart-disease expansion that would have widened the drug, and the partners' [release did not describe a follow-up trial](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260708332180/en/update-on-cardio-ttransform-phase-3-trial-of-eplontersen-in-adults-with-transthyretin-mediated-amyloid-cardiomyopathy/). Imfinzi also failed in adjuvant liver cancer.

The third is leverage plus dependence on China-sourced assets. Two licenses in July carried a combined $800 million in upfront payments and up to $2.8 billion in milestones.

## Our read

AstraZeneca is a growth company in oncology that is managing a decline in a big cardio-renal drug. The latest readouts are encouraging but incomplete, and the full numbers arrive at ESMO on October 24 and 25. Results for nine months follow on [October 30](https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/astrazeneca-results-h1-and-q2-2026). The balance sheet can carry the licensing strategy, but it leaves less room for a large acquisition if one of the late-stage programs falters.
