# Absci has the cash; ABS-201 still has to grow hair

A $100 million raise and a Lilly stake fund Absci into 2028. The endometriosis trial slipped to mid-2027, so the hair loss readout carries the stock.

## The technology

Absci pairs generative AI models with a synthetic biology data engine to design antibodies, [the company says](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-report-business-updates-and-third-quarter-2026-financial). Its lead drug, ABS-201, blocks the prolactin receptor. Absci is testing it in pattern hair loss and plans a trial in endometriosis, where it describes PRLR blockade as a [non-hormonal approach](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-announces-preliminary-details-phase-2-storylinetm-trial-ai). A second PRLR antibody, ABS-202, is in preclinical work for an undisclosed inflammation indication.

The clinical evidence so far is phase 1 safety. In 32 healthy adults given single doses, there were [no serious adverse events](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-announces-positive-interim-phase-1-data-headlinetm-trial), all treatment-related events were mild and the estimated half-life was at least 65 days. That could allow two or three doses over six months. Efficacy data in people with hair loss have not been reported.

## The odds

ABS-201 is a phase 1/2a asset. BIO's dataset puts the chance that a phase 1 drug reaches approval at [7.9%](https://go.bio.org/rs/490-EHZ-999/images/ClinicalDevelopmentSuccessRates2011_2020.pdf), and the chance of moving from phase 1 to phase 2 at 52.0%. Clean single-dose safety and a long half-life clear the first hurdle. The next one is whether blocking the prolactin receptor regrows hair, a mechanism McClain has called potentially "the first new mechanism of action in androgenetic alopecia in nearly three decades," [per the company](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-reports-business-updates-and-first-quarter-2026-financial).

Endometriosis is further back. The planned STORYLINE phase 2 trial of about 150 patients now starts in mid-2027, a delay from the fourth-quarter 2026 start Absci guided to in [August](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-reports-business-updates-and-second-quarter-2026-financial). Phase 2 drugs reach phase 3 about 28.9% of the time.

## The money

Absci had [$201.1 million](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-reports-business-updates-and-second-quarter-2026-financial) in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at June 30, 2026, after raising about $100 million in June at $7.41 a share. It guides to runway into the second half of 2028. The second-quarter net loss was $33.2 million, and partner revenue was $0.3 million.

Eli Lilly made a $40 million equity investment that carries no program rights. Absci said in May it expected to sign one or more partnerships in 2026, including one with a large drugmaker, [per its first-quarter release](https://investors.absci.com/news-releases/news-release-details/absci-reports-business-updates-and-first-quarter-2026-financial).

## The risks

Concentration is the main risk. Both clinical and preclinical lead programs hit the same target, so a mechanism-level failure or safety issue would hit the whole pipeline. The second risk is the efficacy readout itself. The interim HEADLINE data will be the first look at regrowth in people with pattern hair loss, and the full readout runs 26 weeks. The third is timing, after the endometriosis start moved twice in four months. Revenue from partner programs has also fallen, from $0.6 million to $0.3 million a quarter.

## Our read

Absci has turned from an AI services story into a single-asset drug developer, and it has funded that bet through 2028. The phase 1 profile is good for a drug meant to be given a few times a year, and the Lilly investment shows a large company is watching. None of that answers the efficacy question. The interim HEADLINE readout in the second half of 2026 is the event that decides whether ABS-201 is a real hair loss contender, and with it whether the AI design platform has produced a drug that works in people. Until then, the endometriosis program is a second option on the same molecule, now with a later start. A large pharma partnership, which Absci said it expected in 2026, would be the other outside test of the platform, and none has been announced in the company's releases since May.
